About us
The Faculty of Sports Studies hitherto is the youngest of MU faculties established in early 2002 as a result of sports education development in the region. Faculty character issues from sports and physical education history in Brno, Masaryk University had been involved in, too.
Faculty’s mission is promotion of healthy lifestyle attributes as a necessary part of modern lifestyle. The Faculty applies and develops gnosis of sports medicine for the purposes of sports and sport education, transfers the latest knowledge of recovery and nutrition in sports as well as in normal life, brings up qualified experts at educative activities for social and leisure purposes. It also pays attention to special teaching processes necessary for professional performance of security elements.
Faculty instructors also devote their time to, besides teaching, scientific research that concentrates on three basic topics: structural and evolutionary kinanthropology, social, cultural and educational kinanthropology and medical kinanthropology. The faculty collaborates with a number of foreign institutions.
Faculty of Sports Studies educates physical education teachers for schools of all levels, runs doctoral programmes in kinanthropology field of study, trains experts in sports including awarding licences in selected sports. All the effort of studies is arranged into two stages placing accent to exchangeability among different universities of the same type within bachelor’s or master’s studies, respectively. The master’s studies focus on learning physical education teaching. The doctoral degree programme in kinanthropology is intended for master’s degree programme graduates. The goal of the studies is to profound the theoretical knowledge learnt in the master’s degree programme studies and to acquaint independent research working skills.
The working opportunities then are vast. The bachelor’s studies graduates may be employed in school intramural or extramural clubs, in executive position of civic associations, fit-centres, private sports clubs or security agencies. The graduates from teaching master’s studies can find a job as double-subject combination teachers at lower or upper secondary schools. The graduates from single-subject master’s or doctoral studies may realize their potential as physical education teachers at schools of all types, but their primary profession should be university teachers of or researchers in kinanthropology.
Faculty of Sports Studies in numbers
- As of 31 October 2011, there were 1,550 students of regular diploma studies at this faculty altogether, out of which 1,119 in bachelor's degree programmes, 328 in master's degree programmes.
- As of 31 October 2011 another 103 students were in the doctoral degree programmes.
- We have 5 departments, employing 151 personnel, out of which 6 are professors and 14 associate professors.
- The students are taught by 197 instructors altogether, out of which 94 are MU staff, 27 students and 76 externs outside MU.
- In 2011 we registered 1,896 applicants for studies in all open admission procedures, out of which 807 were accepted.
- We educate 2 seriously handicapped students.
- The number of students going abroad in the academic year of 2011/2012 was 37, the number of students coming from abroad in the same academic year was 1.
- The graduates from regular studies in 2011 reached the number of 387, out of which 208 from bachelor’s, 154 from master’s and 16 from PhD studies.
- Since 1998, there have been 2,440 graduates from the studies at our faculty.
