  1. I've deleted important file from my drive K. Is it possible to recover the lost data?

Backing up of home directories is every 3-4 days. If that lost document was present in your directory (disc K:/) while during backing up, it´ll be probably possible to recover it from this back up. Contact the administrator as soon as possible at info@studovna.muni.cz.

  2. I would like to ask what should I do to be able to connect my notebook to the UCC network.

Currently there are two possibilities how to join the network: via WiFi network of UCC or newly via Ethernet sockets 10/100. Cables available at UCC attendants.

  3. Discs I, J, K are unavailable after logging onto a workstation. What shall I do?

Your user profile was damaged, please contact the administrator at info@studovna.muni.cz.

  4. There is a Word document in a webpage (application form appears). How can I fill in the form and send it per e-mail then?

After you´ve clicked on link to the Word document, a question window appears (Do you want to save this document?) -> click on Uložit [Save], save it for example to some file placed on the desktop (don´t click on Otevřít [Open] because then the file would be opened in Internet Explorer, so you won´t be able to save it and forward it then). First then open the saved document and fill in the form. Save the changes. Attach the form as usually to send it per e-mail.

  5. What can I do to prevent loosing an important document while staying in the UCC?

A few recommended practises you find in article dealing with:

    • Don't keep the document on one floppy only! Have the document saved on some other media too. It is possible to use space in your user's profile. It's better to use file K:/ rather than the Desktop because in case of lack of free space in your profile all the changes won't be saved after you log off (the danger of loosing the document is higher than by saving it to K:/... files). You can also use your directory on your home faculty. If there is no other possibility than use of a floppy for saving your files, use more than one floppy then (if there is some problem with one floppy, you can still use the other media).
    • Don't make any changes on document being saved on a floppy! First make a copy of the document into any file placed on the discs. (ex. K:/Documents). Then open the file to do all the changes you wanted to do. After you have finished send the document back to the floppy. This all is because of high danger of failures on the floppy which may be caused by magnetic field, mobile phones, ect. So the danger of damaging your document is higher while you are working with a file saved on a floppy.
    • Don't rely on automatic processes! Although the ability of automatic savings is set in Word, there could some accident happen (such as discontinuing of supply of electricity or some failure directly in Word) and your changes may not be saved. Occasionally press CTRL+S during the work to ensure the latest actualization.
    • Don't edit a ZIP file! First use some program to unwrap the document (such as PowerArchiever). Do all the changes then and after you have finished enclose it in the archive again.

  6. PowerPoint presentation is always printed picture by picture. I´d like to print more pictures in one page. How can I do it?

You can find detailed directions describing different possibilities of printing Power Point presentations at http://www.muni.cz/ics/services/ups/cps/navody/tiskppt

  7. There are thousands of pictures available in J:/MSOffice-clipart directory. How can I use them in my documents?

You can add graphics via Menu-> Vložit [Insert]-> Obrázek [Picture]-> Ze souboru [From file] or Klipart [Clipart]. If you´ve chosen Ze souboru [From file], search for directory J:/MS Office-clipart. Then choose one of the directories CLIPART1 to CLIPART8. You can find thousands of pictures there, which you may use in MS Word documents. Besides various pictures, diagrams and symbols you can also find many interesting photos there (saved in directories PHOTO1 to PHOTO2). If you´ve chosen Klipart [Clipart], a window for searching Cliparts appears in the right part of the screen. Every picture has it´s own several key words, which may facilitate searching for it (if you want to use any picture of a car-> insert car or automobile, etc.). If you click on link Galerie médií [Media gallery] , you would be able to organise the Cliparts into your own collections (for ex. of Cliparts you use most frequently in your documents).)

  8. While using LaTeX czech language doesn´t work in documents saved as PDF and PS. What shall I do?

You probably don´t use package babel in the header of the document. If czech language doesn´t work properly (for ex. special markers such as ´, _,.are let off).Try to use command /usepackage[czech]{babel}/ for your header. An illustrative file ukazkovy.txt containing correct formulations of headers is available in folder J:/textlive-6/example.

  9. Is it possible to scan photos or pictures in the UCC?

There are three scanners installed in the second room, as well as Photoshop and Finereader software. You can also scan using the colour printer, sending documents to your e-mail.

  10. How can I print in the UCC?

Detailed instructions dealing with different possibilities of printing:http://www.muni.cz/ics/services/ups/cps/navody/tisk

  11. How to open and save an attachment of MS Outlook Express?

If it´s not possible to open the e-mail attachment in Outlook Express, you have to set this following preference first: Nástroje [Tools]->Možnosti [Properties]->Zabezpečení [Security]; here tick off the box with text Zakázat otvírání nebo ukládádní příloh, které by mohly obsahovat virus [Prohibit opening or saving attachments that may contain some virus].

  12. While logging off an error report appears: "Systém Windows nemůže aktualizovat cestovní profilu. Kontaktujte správce systému..." ["Windows system is not able to actualise the roaming profile. Please contact the system administrator."] What´s wrong?

Exceeding the capacity quota of disc K:/ causes this error report. Capacity of 100 MB free space is reserved for each user. After filling up the quota, system won´t allow any further savings to disc K:/, until you delete some files to free disk space. All application settings are saved in K:/Profile, it works like this:

After logging on, all files from directory K:/profile are copied to the folder C:/Documents and Settings/your_login at workstation you currently work on. All changes made to the profile during your work are saved into folder C:/Documents and Settings/your_login. When you log off, folder C:/Documents and Settings/your_login is copied back to K:/Profile with all changes made. The copy on the local station will be delete

Exceeding the quota may occur when the profile is copied from the local copy to the folder K:/profile. We recommend not to save any data to the folder K:/profile. Do not save large files to the Desktop either, it´s a part of the profile too. It´s better to save data to the folder K:/Documents that is also available through an icon placed on the desktop. If that mentioned error report appears please check whether you have got enough free space on drive K:. Total sum of used space on drive K: and of profile´s local copy mustn´t exceed the quota of 100 MB. If the troubles do not cease though you have enlarged free space, contact UCC attendant at info@studovna.muni.cz.

  13. I´m waiting for free computer and some students are playing computer games. Have I to wait till they won´t feel bored entertained any more?

It´s not necessary to wait till the person leaves the computer by oneself. If you are waiting for a free computer and someone ruthlessly occupies any place and entertains himself with playing PC games or breaks the Rule Book in any other way, don´t worry to ask him for leaving the place. He is obliged to do it in accordance with the Rule Book. If he doesn´t, ask some UCC attendant for help. He would assist you in the conflict and probably ban the person for breaking the Rule Book.

  14. What should I do to able to attend UCC?

UCC is accessible for all MU students. It is mandatory to have: valid student identitz\y card (ISIC card) and password for log on to the UCC. Before coming to the UCC the password for log on to the UCC has to be set from any computer connected to the Internet on administrative server link to a new windowhttp://is.muni.cz. (Osobní administrativa [Personal settings] -> Přístup [Access] ->Změna hesla [Password change] -> Změna hesla pro POP a studovnu [Change the password for POP and UCC]). It´s possible to set the password directly in UCC on determined computers. You need to know your nickname or UČO and password for IS MUNI.

  15. Where can I find latest information about UCC?

Actual information are published on web page link to a new windowhttp://studovna.muni.cz/.

  16. What is the closing hour of UCC?

The UCC runs NONSTOP (24 hours a day, 7 days a week). Planed intermissions are published in advance.

  17. I´ve changed my password for the UCC on is.muni.cz . When does the modifications show itself?

    The password change occurs immediately.

  18. What server for sending e-mail can I set for my mail client (SMTP server)?

    Use mailstd.muni.cz server.

  19. Would it be possible to enable priority access to the UCC for students who have their own computer to prevent them from queuing in front of the turnstile? This turnstile stops people coming into the area of UCC if overcrowded. In fact I bring my own computer so I could use any place in area of UCC, for ex. I can sit on any bench, use any place in the corridors or on some table.

It's not planed to enable priority access for any students even those with their own computers. The capacity of UCC is limited there for the account of people present in UCC is limited too. We recommend using the possibility to get connected to the network in area of any faculty that provides this service to the students.
