Scholarships and bursaries

Students at Masaryk University may apply for scholarships and bursaries, generally within the framework of scholarship and bursary programmes organized by individual faculties. The MU Scholarship and Bursary Regulations grant individual faculties the power to organize scholarship and bursary programmes in order to support students’ study-related activities; such activities must be in agreement with the general objectives of the faculty as well as of Masaryk University as a whole. Scholarship and bursary programmes are frequently used to support students who have reached excellent study results.

See below for an overview of scholarship and bursary programmes:

In addition to being offered within scholarship and bursary programmes, scholarships and bursaries may also be awarded directly on the basis of the MU Scholarship and Bursary Regulations, specifically for the following purposes:

  • in support of studies in a doctoral degree programme
  • in support of creative activities
  • in support of accommodation
  • in support of mobility
  • in exceptional cases

See the MU Scholarship and Bursary Regulations for detailed information regarding the above mentioned scholarship and bursary types.

Grant in Support of Accommodation

The grant in support of accommodation (i.e. the so-called accommodation grant) was implemented in order to provide public financial assistance; a student is eligible for the accommodation grant in case he/she is enrolled in a full-time degree programme, has a permanent place of residence in a district other than the one he/she is studying in, is enrolled in his/her first degree programme (or in a degree programme which is a follow-up programme to his/her first degree programme), and has not exceeded the standard length of studies. The grant in support of accommodation does not constitute any form of welfare or bursary; a student’s subsistence or any additional circumstances are not taken into account unless specifically listed as decisive criteria in the MU Scholarship and Bursary Regulations.

In accordance with the provisions of section 91, subsection 2, letter d) of the Higher Education Act, the so-called accommodation grant shall be awarded (on submission of an electronic application) to a student who fulfils all of the following criteria:

  • is enrolled in a full-time degree programme,
  • is enrolled in a degree programme which is his/her first degree programme at any university in the Czech Republic with the exception of being enrolled in his/her first follow-up Master’s degree programme (relevant to graduates of Bachelor’s degree programmes) or his/her first doctoral degree programme (relevant to graduates of Master’s degree programmes); furthermore, studies in degree programmes an applicant may have enrolled in and completed between 1 May and 30 October of one calendar year are not taken into account,
  • has not exceeded the standard length of studies in any of the degree programmes which he/she is concurrently enrolled in,
  • does not have a permanent address within the Statutory City of Brno (Brno City district),
  • is not a recipient of a scholarship or bursary within a scholarship and bursary programme announced by the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports in accordance with section 91, subsection 6 of the Higher Education Act, with the exception of a scholarship awarded within the framework of a project successfully submitted in a selection procedure announced by the Higher Education Development Fund.

Bursary

According to the provisions of section 91, subsection 3 of the Higher Education Act (as amended by Act No. 552/2005 Coll.), Masaryk University students who meet the conditions set out by the introductory provisions laid down by law shall be awarded a bursary. According to section 91, subsection 3 of the Higher Education Act, the bursary is awarded within a scholarship and bursary programme announced for this purpose by the Rector of MU.

According to section 91, subsection 3 of the Higher Education Act, the bursary is awarded on submission of a written statement submitted per a request issued by the relevant state social assistance authority, certifying that the family income (established for child allowance purposes) does not exceed 1.5 of the family's subsistence minimums.
