About us

The Centre is a special-purpose institution of MU with public activities. Its aim is to arrange suitable conditions which would ensure that studies at MU are open to the most students and participants of lifelong learning with handicaps of various kinds. Therefore, for these purposes, the Centre has cooperated with specialized departments outside MU and it also affects methodically MU activities in this realm.

Since 2000, Masaryk University has organized entrance examination for handicapped students in a different way – it makes use of information technologies and alternative communication and perceptional methods in order for them to pass the standard written entrance examination.

122 physically handicapped applicants were registered at the entrance examination for the academic year 2005/2006 (i.e. applicants with limited working ability or the holders of ZTP card). As far as the type of a handicap is concerned, 22 kinetically handicapped, 33 auditory handicapped and 43 visually handicapped applicants were registered. The rest of the applicants had a combined or other handicap. Approximately one third of the applicants registered for preliminary courses which are organized by the Support Centre for Students with Special Needs.

The number of handicapped students enrolled in MU programmes in the academic year 2005/2006 was 65. Therefore, the representation of visually handicapped students of MU corresponds to the number of visually handicapped students in the population. 37 semester courses of individual teaching and personal assistance were arranged for these students. Furthermore, 650 publications of academic literature were made available to them. The capacity of the university’s study room for the blind was enlarged and the activities of Lifelong learning for visually handicapped students were also elaborated.

The number of auditory handicapped students at MU in the academic year 2005/2006 increased to 33. Assistant services for these students were extended, including the university dispatching of sign language interpreting. Likewise, the language education for deaf students was enlarged.

The number of kinetically handicapped students of MU in the academic year 2005/2006 increased from 9 to 16.
