Online classes will be marked in the course catalogue in IS

Due to the current epidemiological situation, in the autumn 2020 semester most classes at Masaryk University will be held online. There are, however, some exceptions to this general rule; at some faculties in-person classes will be held in a limited capacity. You can find basic information about whether the courses you have registered for will be held online in the course catalogue in the MU Information System. This information will be updated by 3 October 2020.

The Czech government has declared a state of emergency for 30 days

The government of Czech Republic has declared a state of emergency for 30 days, starting on Monday, 5 October. The main reason to do so is to give the government the ability to more easily issue and implement regulations and distribute medical equipment throughout the worsening epidemiological situation in the Czech Republic.

MU employees are now required to report potential exposure in the Prevention app

A new internal application for employees will help identify people who may have been exposed to the coronavirus at work. The aim of this app is to lower the spread of COVID-19 at Masaryk University. All employees will find the Prevention app in INET and the Employee Portal. Based on Decision of the Rector No. 9/2020, all employees are required to use this app to report having been in contact with someone who tested positive for the coronavirus, having tested positive themselves, or having experienced COVID-19 symptoms such as fever, cough, shortness of breath, sore throat, or headache.

This week, we have received a number of questions concerning the autumn semester at Masaryk University. The most frequent ones are answered below. Please bear in mind that the situation may change due to regulations of public authorities. Therefore, please follow muni.cz/en/coronavirus. Follow also the websites of individual faculties concerning the issues that cannot be dealt with by the university management.

The Office for Studies has issued a methodological guide for teaching in the autumn semester

The Office for Studies of the Masaryk University Rector’s Office issued a new methodological guideline No. 2/2020, which sets out the basic rules for the organization of teaching and examinations at Masaryk University in the autumn semester of the academic year 2020/2021. Contact teaching will be possible in practical courses and small groups.

MU calls upon regional public health authority to revoke measures aimed at universities

The rector of Masaryk University (MU), Martin Bareš, has written a letter to the South Moravian Regional Public Health Office (KHS JMK), calling upon it to revoke an emergency measure banning in-person classes at universities declared on 22 September. According to the university’s lawyers, the KHS JMK does not have the legal authority to issue such a blanket regulation, which is therefore in violation of the law.

Public Health Department has banned in-person teaching at universities in Brno

The Regional Public Health Department in Brno has banned in-person teaching at all Brno universities, including Masaryk University, starting on Thursday 23 September. Exceptions include individual consultations, individual visits to libraries and study rooms, examinations up to 10 people and laboratories, experimental and artistic work up to 15 people. Clinical, practical teaching and traineeships are also allowed.

MU organises testing sessions for incoming international students and staff

International students and staff members of Masaryk University may use special testing sessions for PCR COVID-19 testing organized by MU and University Hospital Brno. Testing of arriving students and employees from high-risk countries will take place on three different days in September and tests are considered as official PCR tests for the purpose of COVID-19 testing after arrival to the Czech Republic.

Most classes at MU to be held online during the autumn semester

Classes at Masaryk University (MU) will primarily be held remotely in the autumn semester. In-person classes will be offered mainly to first-year students. Laboratory classes and small seminars that are part of practical and clinical courses will also be allowed for older students.

Masaryk University traffic-light system will turn yellow on Monday

Due to the current epidemiological situation in the Czech Republic, the Crisis Board of Masaryk University decided that the university traffic-light system would turn yellow starting Monday, 21 September. From Monday, the public is forbidden to enter all MU buildings and all in-person teaching for more than 50 people will be only in online mode.

New measures are in force, including compulsory facemasks in classes

Due to the current epidemiological situation, new measures are in force in the Czech Republic starting Friday 18 September. All students at higher education institutions must wear facemasks in classes, not only in the common areas of schools.

Facemasks are mandatory in common places of MU buildings

The Ministry of Health is responding to the epidemiological situation. As of Thursday, 10 September, it is mandatory to wear facemasks in all indoor places and in the common areas of schools and universities. The nationwide obligation to wear facemasks in public transport continues to apply.
