The project aims to research the cultural and reception history of American and West-European Cinema in Czechoslovakia between 1945 and 1989. It intends to reveal the strategies used in the selection of movies for distribution, the role of film import for the official cultural politics, the ways the negotiations between the representatives of Czech and American film industry were conducted, and the economic and politic intersts involved. The research into perriod press and the empirical research (interviews and questionnaires)will provide the basis for the exploration of the history of reception, cultural memory and the role of cinema in everyday life. The results of this research will show the cultural preferences of particular audiences and the scale of meanings and strategies of reading involved in the reception of "western" cinema. The main output of this project will be presented in a published form. Seconadary output: presentation of the outcomes of this research at international conferences and in both Czech and foreign journals, archiving and creating a database of the collected material and data for future research.
