Description | This book is an anthology of Byzantine spiritually beneficial tales translated into Czech (Daniel of Sketis, John Moschus, Anastasius of Sinai, Paul of Monembasia). The translation is provided with explanatory notes and preceded by an introductory study, which attempts to define the genre, both of the tales themselves and their collections, and to describe its main features. The development of the genre from its emergence in the late 4th century until the 10th century is outlined and an attempt to set the Byzantine tales into the context of Byzantine and European literature is undertaken. The annotation comprises of notes on the translation, geographical and prosopographical information and interpretative notes as well. Each single translation is accompanied by a short introduction about the author and the text. |
