Description | The aim of this book is to undertake a complex narratological analysis of the Byzantine literary genre of the spiritually beneficial tale. The main corpus of texts constitute seven collections originating from the 4th to the 10th centuries: Historia monachorum in Aegypto, Historia Lausiaca by Palladios, the Daniel Sketiotes Dossier, Pratum spirituale by John Moschos, both collections of Anastasios Sinaites, and the tales by Paulos of Monembasia. The analysis profits in particular from the methods of classical structuralist narratology enriched by the approaches of diachronic narratology. The individual chapters are devoted to the narrative structure of the tales and its development, the categories of space and time, the functions of the narrator, his relation to the author and the heroes, and the shifting of narrative levels. The multiple-strand analysis employed leads to an outline of the development of the narrative strategies in the genre. |
