| Description | This study deals with function and significance of animal myths appearing particularly in the Japanese imperial chronicles of Kojiki and Nihonoshoki. It presents selected myths and narratives in which deities and spirits, which appear in the form of animals, play an important role. The aim is to delineate symbolism, characteristics and also the role that animals in these stories embody. The text is mainly aimed at snakes, but it also introduces other important figures of the animal kingdom that appear to the heroes of selected Japanese myths. Using historical connections, it illustrates the realities between myth and power, or in other words, religious and political interpretations of these stories. |
