| Description | This three-part series presents the basic theories of metaphor in analytical philosophy. This first part sheds light on the beginnings of the interaction theory in I. A. Richards, as presented in The Philosophy of Rhetorics (1936), the second part in the next issue is the now-classic presentation of interaction theory in M. Black (1954–79) and finally, part three will present a critique of D. Davidson's interaction theory and his causal theory (1978). Although these three theories of metaphor arose during the last century, they are still widely discussed, so it could be said that their legacy is still alive today. Undoubtedly, most of today's reflections on metaphor in analytic philosophy are based on these three theories. |
