Description According to the UN Refugee Agency, the Czech Republic ranks third among EU countries (after Poland and Germany) in the number of Ukrainian refugees who applied for temporary protection after the start of the full-scale invasion of their country by Russia. As Burke et al. point out (2022, 1), “the expanding application of technology in refugee contexts can create new opportunities to empower displaced individuals”. Indeed, Ukrainian war refugees have made extensive use of online machine translators for bridging the language barrier. Based on semi-structured interviews with Czech Labour Office officials, this paper describes their experience in communicating with Ukrainian refugees by means of a machine translator and explores the power dynamics in these settings.
