Description | The aim was to verify the effectiveness of surgical treatment of idiopathic macular holes (IMH) using a pars plana vitrectomy (PPV) with peeling of the internal limiting membrane (ILM) and 15% perflouropropanem tamponade (C3F8). The group included 52 patients (54 eyes, 45 women, 5 men), mean age 68.2 5.9 years. Two patients were operated on both eyes gradually. IMH stage was determined on the basis of clinical examination supplemented by examination using optical coherence tomography (OCT). The average follow up period was set at 14.0 9.6 months. The final result was tested by OCT at the last examination of the patient. All 52 patients underwent standard PPV accompanied by peeling of the ILM. Trypan blue (Membrane blue, Dorc) was injected into air-filled eye for 1 minute. There was then performed peeling stained ILM in macular region, followed by 15% C3F8 tamponade. Patients were advised to maintain the prone position the head for 2 weeks. Best-corrected visual acuity was detected on the ETDRS optotypes (Early Treatment Diabetic retinopathy Study). PPV supplemented by peeling IMH is an effective method in the treatment of IMH. Trypan blue (Membrane blue, Dorc) facilitates the peeling ILM. |
