The plants of the genus Uvaria (Annonaceae) belong to a group of plants with climbing stems or trunks, and are less commonly known as trees. They are largely distributed in regions with tropical climate. They have been documented as having medicinal importance against fever, microbial infections, and tumours. Some Uvaria species were phytochemically explored, however, recently, a new species, U. clementis was identified in southern Thailand. Therefore, this project aims to conduct a comparative study of the phytochemical contents of the newly discovered species U. clementis and other previously identified species (U. rufa, U. siamensis, and U. grandiflora) from the same area.
Extensive chromatographic analysis, preparative separation and spectral analysis will be used for the isolation and identification of content compounds. Later, assays to evaluate biological activities (anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antibacterial) will be conducted using crude extracts and isolated phytochemicals to pinpoint their possible pharmaceutical and medicinal importance.
