Popis | Today, there is widespread agreement that some nouns are predicates and therefore admit arguments. Generally, though not always, predicative nouns are event nouns, i.e. nouns that, apart from having a referential function, denote states, actions, processes and achievements. Some nouns are clearly eventive, but others are ambiguous: these are the ones traditionally referred to as nouns of action and effect. However, the two possible interpretations show semantic and syntactic properties that allow us to make a distinction. This article examines the analysis of various different authors in distinguishing between event or process nouns and effect or result nouns, and establishes a list of fifteen distinctive properties. |
