Popis OBJECTIVES Only a minority of HPV infections lead to invasive neoplastic state, indicating that viral oncogenes expression is not per se sufficient, and other events are required for succesfull oncogenesis. Presented study determines whether the HPV status in head and neck cancer (HNC) patients corresponds to biochemical markers of oxidative stress - metallothionein and reduced (GSH) and oxidized (GSSG) glutathiones. CONCLUSION Our examination of oxidative stress in HPV positive and negative specimens revealed differences in metallothionein levels. Our findings show that oxidative stress is involved in oncogenesis of HPV and further analyses of production of reactive oxygen species after infection should be performed.
