Popis | Research on tsunamis using the geological record, may aid to extend the long-term history, and recurrence intervals of large events. The study of tsunami deposits requires the use of a set of proxies, among them magnetic properties, a tool that still needs more exploration. Here we investigate the use of a set of magnetic parameters to study tsunami deposits on the Jalisco coast of Mexico which overlies the subducting Rivera Plate under the North American plate. We present a line of evidence to demonstrate the presence of anomalous sand units at El Tecuán shore on the Jalisco coast that may be the products of tsunamis. Magnetic parameters studied, and in particular SIRM, S-300 and Bcr, show a good correlation with the stratigraphy, allowing identifying and distinguishing different sedimentary units. Although AMS results are not conclusive, the bottom units can be distinguished with this parameter. Further development and use of magnetic parameters in tropical environments where the preservation of tsunami deposits is poor, would aid in their identification. |
