Popis | Among the libraries in the Czech lands from the period 1770-1790 there are two library halls, which are most interesting from the art historical point of view and therefore also most studied: the destroyed library hall in the Premonstratensian Monastery Klosterbruck/Louka bei Znaim and its replica in the Premonstratensian Canonry in Prag-Strahov. The latter was the work of the Strahov Abbot Václav Josef Mayer, who ordered the replica and thus preserved the Klosterbruck library in his monastery in Prague. The frescoes in both library halls were painted by Franz Anton Maulbertsch. These libraries were usually analysed as individual objects whereas other Czech libraries of this period were not taken in account. This article describes the artistic decoration and the furnishing of all documented Czech libraries of the period 1770-1790: their iconography provides a wider historical context for the iconographic and art-decorative conception of the Maulbertschs wall paintings in the libraries in Klosterbruck and Strahov. The second part of the paper presents some interesting results, brought forth by the latest research on both Maulbertschs libraries-frescoes. |
