Popis | Secessionism in the European Union is on the rise, yet there is close connection between secession pressures and the fiscal autonomy. In this contribution we analyse secession in terms of the fiscal federalism among twelve NUTS 2 European regions using original dataset based on the regional fiscal, economic, political and demographical data. Secessionist regions are described and compared with the same-status regions in their country. We discuss the differences in the fiscal autonomy degree in the secessionist and non-secessionist regions and the evolution of the fiscal autonomy in European regions. The relationship between secessionist party support and fiscal autonomy is monitored. We have found out, that the new after-secessionist state would be viable from the demographical as well as economic point of view. The secessionist regions show higher degree of the fiscal as well as complex autonomy and their autonomy was increasing in the last three decays. There is very close relationship between the degree of democracy and degree of fiscal autonomy. Furthermore, we discovered that if the region once reached the certain degree of the fiscal autonomy, it is less keen on supporting the real secession. |
