Popis | Burials of human remains at settlements outside the cemeteries established for this very purpose is a phenomenon that is evident throughout the entire prehistory until the Early Middle Ages. In the case of settlements, distinction must be made between burials in grave pits, i.e. special-purpose features, and burials in settlement features whose formal purposes were different (the so-called pit burials). When talking about human remains in settlement features (typically, underground silos or remains of fortifications) we often use the term “deposition”, as the features are not strictly graves and, in many cases, the process as such is not burial but rather some sort of “waste management”. |
