Popis Populism is becoming an increasingly important issue for understanding the dynamics of European politics and society. The relationship between welfare attitudes and support for populism is a newly emerging field; however, much of the original attention focused on rightwing populism. Now there are an increasing number of both leftist and centrist populist parties. Considering the impact of the economic downturns – especially now with the Covid pandemic --and the ongoing welfare state retrenchment in many countries, welfare attitudes and one’s assessment of welfare state performance represent increasingly relevant area for studying. It also raises the issue on the supply side: do different types of populist parties have different types of welfare ideologies? The, papers in the stream analyze the dynamics of different types of populist parties and their interaction with different types of welfare regimes and the different types of voters, with focus on the questions like Which types of populist parties are most likely to emerge under different types of welfare regimes? What are the differences in profiles between voters of leftwing, rightwing and centrist populist parties? Do the voters of these different types of parties have different types of welfare attitudes? And what are the demographics involved? The quantitative as well as qualitative or mixed method studies focusing on this issue from either the supply or demand side are involved.
