Popis | The present article explores how, in Herodotus’ view, monarchy affects decisionmaking, focusing on the specific case of the Persian Council Debate that took place before Xerxes’ expedition to Greece. The study also places the debate into the broader context of Herodotus’ Histories. Herodotus illustrates how monarchy silences the people around the autocratic leader; he also describes the kinds of people who profit from monarchy and the methods they use to achieve their aims. The study approaches the debate in the Persian court as a living process that gradually changes as different participants become involved. In this way, I introduce a new perspective on Herodotus’ analysis of the debate, as well as on the dynamics of the debate itself. I also propose perspectives on this matter that are either completely new or have only been partially explored. |
