Popis | This article deals with the pronunciation issues and the problem of understanding of spoken Dutch by native speakers of Czech and Slovak. The problem of speech intelligibility is illustrated by a small-scale study done on two groups of students with A1 and A2 level. This study analyses how these students understand everyday spoken Dutch. The focus is on cases where there is a lot of sound reduction. The reduction can be predictable on the one hand, such as at the end of a word or in unstressed syllables. On the other hand, the so-called extreme reduction or unpredictable reduction as Ernestus et al. (2016) call it, causes greater intelligibility problems. Both types of reduction occur in a number of test sentences in this small-scale study. Moreover, a distinction is made between reduction in content words and function words. In this article I argue that knowledge of reduction patterns can have a positive influence on the comprehension of everyday Dutch for A1 and A2 students. However, more research is needed to support this hypothesis. |
