Popis Patients and methods: We examined in cooperation with general practitioners seniors living in their own environment in a rural area. These seniors underwent functional geriatric testing (MMSE, ADL, IADL, Geriatric Depression Scale). The history of patients and their medications were considered, hematology and biochemistry examinations were performed. Data were analyzed by statistical methods Student T-test, chi quadrate test, regression analysis. Results: We examined alltogether 147 seniors (55 men and 92 women) of average age 72,8+6,29 years ranging 65-98 years. The criteria of MS fulfilled 23 patients, 15,7% of studied group according to IDF definition. Another 18 patients, 12,1% of studied group showed 3 present criteria of MS (according to NCEP ATIII), but without abdominal obesity. We found negative association between MS appearance and age r = - 0,10, p>0,05 the tendency to lower frequency of MS in higher age, significant negative correlation with cognitive performance (MMSE) r = -0,44, independency (ADL) r =-0,44 and depression scale results r = 0,21. Conclusions: The frequence of metabolic syndrome in elderly population is 20-40% according to used criteria. Metabolic syndrome worses significantly cognitive impairment, independency and depression of seniors.
