Popis Learning Objectives – 1. To describe normal anatomy and topographic relationships of the duodenum. 2. To remind and summarize radiologic findings in common and less frequent pathologic entities of the duodenum (congenital, inflammatory, traumatic, neoplastic disease). Background – Most of the recent gastrointestinal radiologic literature seems to focuse the attention on the colon, stomach and mesenteric small bowel, however this short segment of the intestine should not be forgotten and overlooked because it is the site of important, common as well as rare pathologic entities. Proximity of structures as the liver, gallbladder, stomach, pancreas and the spine results in frequent secondary involvement to pathologic processes beside primary pathologies, so that differential diagnosis could be frequently a real challenge for radiologists. Imaging Findings or Procedure Details – Improvement of imaging modalities in recent years has resulted in more frequent detection, sometimes as an incidental finding, of various duodenal abnormalities. In all radiology modalities direct or indirect signs of duodenal pathologies can be detected. We will review imaging findings of ultrasound, conventional and double-contrast radiologic examinations, MDCT in the study of the duodenum. Criteria for differential diagnosis of duodenal wall thickening from various origin as well as integrating diagnostic method (gastro- duodenal fibroscopy - biopsy- histopathology) findings will be also considered. Conclusion- Combination of high morbidity and mortality and difficulty in establishing the clinical diagnosis increases the importance of the radiologist in detection of duodenal pathologies.
