The same input data as for the QS WUR is applied to the assessment of universities in the various fields of science. In the current ranking published in March 2025, a total of 55 subjects and 5 broad subject areas were assessed: Arts & Humanities, Engineering & Technology, Life Sciences & Medicine, Natural Sciences and Social Sciences & Management. A total of 5,203 institutions from 148 countries were included in the assessment, and a total of 1,747 institutions were published in individual Subject Rankings.
Masaryk University ranked in a total of 15 subjects in the QS Subject Rankings published in 2025. Across the subjects, it performs best in the indicators Citations per Paper (the best for Environmental Sciences and Chemistry) and H-Index (highest score for Law and for Politics & International Studies). It has strong Academic reputation in Environmental Sciences and Archaeology subject fields and Employer Reputation in Environmental Sciences and Physics & Astronomy.
The highest overall score after weighting individual indicators was achieved by MU in Environmental Sciences (69.4), Education (61.3), and Archaeology (60.2).
Methodology:
The subject rankings use a lighter set of indicators than the QS WUR. Their weightings are also distributed differently for each individual subject to take into account the specificities of each discipline. The universities do not provide any input data for these rankings, the evidence is supplied by Elsevier (from the Scopus database of peer-reviewed publications), and the results of two reputation surveys also enter the rankings. The rankings are therefore based on 4-5 indicators: the reputation of the institution in the field among academics, reputation among employers, citations per publication, the H-index and, for selected fields, also the IRN (International Research Network) Index.
