Inception and development of drug abuse is underlined by affecting of wide range of neurophysiological regulatory mechanisms. Influence of changed activity of the appropriate neurotransmitter systems is the best known. A significant role is believed to be associated with the influence of serotonergic (5-HT) neurotransmitter system which among others affects the regulation of mood. Rather detailed information exist on the role of 5-HT in central nervous system influencing behaviour associated with the reward mechanisms. The attention is paid to the study of 5-HT also in the consideration of possible preventive and therapeutic approach to drug dependence. Direct influence of 5-HT and ligands of individual 5-HT receptor subtypes in the brain is referred in association with the effects of many drugs with the high abuse potential, among others with methamphetamine (pervitine).
