We conducted a prospective, multicentric, randomised, controlled trial to compare the efficacy and safety of propranolol and endoscopic variceal band ligation for the primary prophylaxis of variceal bleeding. Only patients with high-risk esophageal varices will participate in this study with principal end point to decrese the probability of life-threatening bleeding from esophageal varices.
