The project focuses on the recognition of differences in the social reproduction of ethnic minorities (specifically their educational aspirations and strategies) in majority society and its educational system, which (only) gradually cope with the growth of ethnic diversity brought about by growing immigration and the emancipation of disadvantaged groups. On the basis of research into the everyday lives of children at basic schools and through interviews with relevant social actors (parents, pedagogical assistants, community representatives and non-governmental organizations), the aim is to determine how children from selected ethnic groups integrate (or not) into their school environments and in what context ethnicity is constructed and accentuated in the classroom. We also take age and gender into consideration. Moreover, since all of these issues significantly relate to the childrens family backgrounds, the research examines their families, in particular, the interaction between parents and the school environment and to the unintended consequences of all these processes.
