The project seeks to explore and expand the field of photoremovable protecting groups (PPGs). The photochemistry of suggested PPGs will be applied to the protection of amines and carboxylic acids, synthesis of interesting moieties which are hardlyavailab le by conventional chemistry, as well as to combinatorial chemistry and biochemistry. Such search for novel PPGs is demanded today, especially because using a well-designed group saves time, chemicals and protects the substrates. PPGs become animportant tool to study the events that follow chemical signalling in, e.g., cell biology and the neurosciences. Our 5-year experience in the field of photochemical cleavage protecting groups and sufficient equipment should guarantee successfulcompletion of the re search plan and a broader interest of the chemical and biological community.
