The postsocialist city is defined as a temporary phenomenon in the project context. It is the background for research of social and economic transformation processes taking part in the postcommunist countries. Processes driven by the changes of outward economic and politic conditions combined with number of reparative transitive processes (e.g. deregulation, privatization) head towards building of new socio-economic spatial patterns, towards new distribution of real and symbolic values, productive and consumption functions within the city. At the same time the inertia of economic and physical socialistic structures remains the important variable of postsocialist city development.
Identification, analysis and interpretation of the spatial distribution of social and economic functions within the urban space are the aims of the project. International comparison of postsocialist cities and geographic interpretation of functional changes are the inputs for typology of processes and their holders exploitable in the practice of spatial and strategic planning.
