The project focuses on the psychological aspects of overtraining syndrome (OTS) in elite adolescent athletes. OTS is maladaptive response to long-lasting excessive exercise without adequate periods of recovery. Besides the wide spectrum of physiological symptoms, OTS is coupled with numerous psychological correlates. The main goal of the project is to investigate the role of perfectionism in developing of OTS. Considering the current understanding of perfectionism construct as multidimensional, we hypothesize that individual dimensions differ in the way how they influence OTS. Most deleterious impact on developing OTS can have evaluative concerns perfectionism, which is characterized by harsh self-criticism, doubts and concerns, originating mainly from external resources. The study will be based on longitudinal research design on elite adolescent athletes from several sport disciplines with high probability of developing OTS (e.g. athletics, sport gymnastics, or swimming). The athletes will be observed whole year during all phases of sport season.
