Buffers are used to maintain a stable pH in biochemical and pharmaceutical samples; they, however, alter their capacities in the frozen state, leading to partial or full degradation and loss of compounds’ functions. This project aims to study and characterize the freezing-induced acidity changes in the most frequent biological buffers within their operational pH ranges, in the presence and absence of cryoprotectants. Relevant mitigation strategies to minimize the acidity jumps will be tested.
