The project asks how political accountability functions in municipalities of different sizes and with different experiences of amalgamation, and how this functioning translates into levels of trust in political institutions at different levels of government. In particular, the project focuses on how contextual characteristics of municipalities affect electoral decision-making and the role of performance evaluation of local politicians. To understand the possible mechanisms, the role of local identity and specific political conditions of municipalities (competitiveness of elections, holding of referenda, etc.) is also included in the research. The research questions will be answered using quantitative methods applied to data on electoral behaviour from the exit poll survey conducted within the project.
