What is the pattern of economic collective mobilization in post-socialist countries? The primary
goal of this project is to collect and analyze data on economic collective action and protest in
the Czech Republic and Slovakia between the fall of Communism and recent economic
downturns related to the COVID-19 pandemic and war in Ukraine (1990-2022). In this project,
we generally draw on Polanyian logic: following gradual establishment of capitalist economy we
focus on the evolution of economic collective action field accompanying this process. The tools
of protest event and social network analysis (SNA) will be employed in order to collect and
analyze data. We expect that the results of project will contribute to the change of the academic
debate on economic conflict and social movements in the post-socialist countries by putting
emphasis on relational aspects of collective action and by showing how this action evolved in
new economic and political regimes.
