This project aims to study border effect in European passenger transport. The border effect measures how much the trade or traffic flows are diminished when crossing borders or simply the reduction of traffic due to the presence of a border. This effect is a critical research issue for many scholars, predominantly in the field of trade. However, the border effect in transport is rarely examined, especially in passenger traffic. There are many methods of how the border effects can be captured. The primary considered model would be the gravity model, which can capture the effect of differently specified borders on the volume of traffic. This study of the border effect fills a particular research gap with applying a unique data source to the whole Europe. It provides a basis for a broader discussion within economic policy, mainly focusing on EU transport policy.
