Description Enterococci are a clinically important group of bacteria for humans and animals. Over the past decade, the genus Enterococcus has been studied using various classification methods and the number of newly described species increased rapidly. Poyart et al. used amplification and sequencing of the internal DNA fragment of the manganese-dependent superoxide dismutase gene sodA for identification of Gram-positive cocci. The degenerate primers were designed for identification of streptococci, and lately, a database of specific sequences of 19 enterococcal species was constructed. In the current study, we aimed to evaluate this method to identify another 18 recently described enterococcal species.
