| Description | Since its establishment, psychology has made a significant progress in many of its areas, one comparable to that of the most advanced natural sciences, such as chemistry, biology, or medicine. It might be because of the fact that some psychological disciplines have come closer to such sciences, drawing on their methods, sometimes even merging with them to create brand new scientific fields. However, disregarding such instances, an utterly contradictory orientation can be found in contemporary psychology, i.e. a number of stagnant and conservative approaches that have neither any chance of development nor do they offer any scientific prospects. What, then, is the nature of modern psychology, where does it aim to go, and how does it contribute to the modern scientific knowledge? The following article aims to elaborate on these questions and to present a basic view of the current psychological science. With regard to its clarity, the text has been divided into two sections. The first one deals with a theoretical view of psychology, its structure and definition, whereas the second part focuses on its current scientific and research profile. Furthermore, an original research analysing a sample of academic psychological periodicals, including an overview of the research results and their interpretation, is presented. |
