Description This study deals with one of the most remarkable Czech catholic hymn-book of the Baroque period Capella regia musicalis by Karel Václav Holan Rovenský, published in the years 1693 and 1694. The hymn-book contains almost 800 songs and instrumental pieces and inspired and influenced other authors. There is, however, no critical edition of the work. The authors of the present study intend to make a selection of Rovenský's songs and prepare the first modern edition of them. The study introduces the author and his work, tries to place it in the context of Baroque hymnography and focuses on selected issues, namely the role of the hymn-book in the Czech tradition of sacred music and literature, its structure and form, and, more importantly, its sources (songs by other authors), the modifications by Holan, as well as his own songs and compositions. Another important issue discussed is the existence of two basic versions of the work, each with many various forms. The study further focuses on literary and musical characteristics of selected songs. The study is completed by a table of the authorial songs.
