| Description | The book presents results of the faunal and ecological monitoring of mammals of the Czech Republic, lasting over half a century. The introductory chapters present the basic characteristics of mammals including the most recent changes in their systematics, an outline of the development of our mammal fauna, emphasizing the 20th and 21st centuries, and a concise description of methods employed in monitoring them in the field. The bulk of the book is a complete enumeration of mammal species living in the territory of the Czech Republic by the half of 2012. For each species, the text includes a brief description, main discriminating characters, body dimensions, overall range, and a detailed review of its occurrence in this country, accompanied by a grid distribution map, a detailed description of habitat requirements incl. elevation above sea level (distribution over altitudinal zones by 200 m a.s.l. as a column diagram is presented on the background of the altitudinal relief of the Czech Republic as a grey area graph). Brief information is also attached on their life habits (movements and spatial activity, food, reproduction, etc.). |
