Description | The goal of this study is to demonstrate that Jaroslav Volek's conception of modality and flexible diatonic can serve as a methodological and theoretical tool for analysis of melodic paradigms (MP) of musical folklore. An analysis of 127 folk songs from the ethnographic region of Horňácko (taken from Zeman, Martin: Horňácké písně, eds. Toncrová, Marta - Uhlíková, Lucie. Brno: Etnologický ústav AV ČR, 2000) has been conducted. The purpose of the analysis was to validate and specify Holý's (1966) and Trojan's (1980) theses about a character of scales of Moravian musical folklore, especially from the region of Horňácko (predominance of Lydian, Mixolydian and Dorian features, irrelevance of n-chords and n-tonics etc.). Based on author's own systematics of MPs (using Volek's theory), frequency of MPs and diatonic flexions was evaluated. In the researched group of tunes, MPs based on major scale predominate. The most frequent flexions are those situated at the fourth or seventh grade of major scale and at the sixth and seventh grade of minor scale; but the flexions at the third grade are the most frequent at all. Among Gregorian modes, the Lydian one predominates. |
