Description | Oral mucositis is a common adverse effect of radiotherapy in head and neck cancer and of intensive chemotherapy. It arises as a result of damage to the mucous and submucous membranes. Because of its manifestations, oral mucositis worsens the quality of life and can havea negative impact on the treatment course, outcome, and cost. The basic approach is the oral care. Oral mucositis treatment focuses primarily on symptom management. Only some patients are eligible for specific prophylactic measures. |
