Description The best known confusing parameter is age, which has a relationship with the target variable and its influence misrepresents our speculation about relationship between a dependent and an independent variable. In our previous study (Závodná, CJPP 2006; 84: 1275-1283), we have shown effect of the mean inter-beat interval (IBI) on the interpretation of the development of baroreflex sensitivity commonly expressed in ms/mmHg (BRS) in the group of children, adolescents and young adults at the age range from 11 to 20 years with wide dispersion of mean IBI. The aim of the study is to shown dependency rate of short term parameters of heart rate variability on the mean inter-beat interval or the mean heart rate. The results have shown that standard deviation of IBI and heart rate decrease with age in the age groups 11-20 years. However this significant decrease was covered by the age-changes of IBI, and was not detectable by classical statistical analysis. In this example was IBI a confusing parameter.
