Description A coplanar and a volume dielectric barrier discharge operating in atmospheric air were employed for plasma activation of the surface of spruce fibers. Capillary penetration (Washburn method) measurements revealed improved wettability of activated fiber surface. FTIR spectra revealed the generation of stable oxygen-containing functional groups and surface cross-linking of lignin by plasma treatment, which resulted in enhanced coupling of fibers in fiberboards prepared from activated fibers.
