Description | Although musculoskeletal sarcomas belong to the group of radioresistant tumours, radiotherapy does play its role in the treatment of such tumours. Radiotherapy is applied as pre-operative treatment in selected cases; its main task, however, lies in neoadjuvant and palliative treatment strategies. The basis for the treatment is a surgical procedure which, together with the histological properties of the tumour, determines further therapy. External radiotherapy may be accompanied by interstitial brachyradiotherapy; in exceptional cases an intraoperational application is carried out. Optimum high radiation doses (60 to 80Gy) are usually limited by the toleration of the surrounding tissues. Cooperation between the radiodiagnostician and the surgeon is vital for delivering quality radiotherapy. |
