Description The aim of this study is to describe body image and global self-esteem among obese patients and how they change in connection with the weight reduction. We gathered data in a study of 90 obese women and men in two stages - at the beginning of the ambulant reduction treatment and after six months. We observed body image using Physical Self-Perception Profile, the level of global self-esteem was measured by Rosenberg self esteem scale. We found statistically significant decrease in BMI for obese patients, increase of global self-esteem and body-esteem, for women increased physical attractiveness as well. Body image correlates with global self-esteem in women in all observed scales, men's global self-esteem is attached only to physical strength. We did not find a relationship between BMI and global self--esteem, relationship between BMI and some subdomains of body image did appear in those individuals who later managed to reduce their body weight by more than 10%. Our results could be important for the prediction of the effectiveness of the reduction treatment and suggestive for the planning psychological interventions focused on enhancement of body image in obese patients.
