| Description | The aim of this paper is to evaluate and analyse the importance of the Ankara Agreement and its impact on the development of the relations (especially economic) of Turkey and the European Economic Community since 1959 (Turkey applied for associate membership) till the provisions of the Customs Union. However, the main emphasis is on formative period respectively 1960s–1970s. After five years of negotiations in 1964 the Ankara Agreement entered into force. The Ankara Agreement is considered as a fundamental document defining relations between Turkey and the EEC. This is so-called Association Agreement under Article 238 of the EEC. By its nature the Ankara Agreement is an international treaty sui generis and according to EC legislation is admittedly less than the adoption (Turkey) as a full member of the EEC, but on the other hand, it is as far more than just a trade agreement. Ankara Agreement should ensure the gradual deepening of economic relations of Turkey and the EEC. The aim of this paper is to clarify the specifics of the Ankara Agreement, and also to track the implementation of obligations under the Ankara Agreement in the context of the Turkish politics. |
