Description | The main part of the thesis consists of matrimonium or marriage, without which the Roman family could not have been possible, nor the patriarch under patria manus or patria potestas. The father required a legal marriage to pass on his family cult and hearth. Without legitimate offspring, his entire family would die out.Rome did not allow for just anybody to become a husband or wife. The aim of the lawgivers was to create a system of obstacles that would prevent marriage under civil law. An absolute prohibition was applied to direct bloodlines; for indirect bloodlines, the ban on marriage was in force for relatives three times removed. A marriage between persons of direct bloodline was considered incestuous. These prohibitions were circumvented with the help of previous marital relationships. This article was written in response to specific research MUNI/A/0943/2011 . This paper is part memoir legal , religious and political aspects of ancient Roman family and is listed in the section titled Roman family. |
