Description | Located near the Arctic Circle, the Solovetsky Islands are known as the historic location of a Gulag (labour camp for political prisoners). At present, the archipelago is a popular destination for dark tourism and welcomes visitors from all over the world. The islands’ historical and societal significance, however, is rooted in a much earlier era. The authors describe the islands’ role over the course of history, focusing on development of the religious influence of the Solovetsky Islands and the later establishment of a communist labour camp. |
