Citation
Description Catalina de Erauso, a fascinating character of the 17th century, was both a nun and a soldier. In her memoirs (Historia de la monja alférez), which are still a source of inspiration for many authors, this idiosyncratic figure captures the difficult journey she took to make her dreams come true, when she decided to live as a man. Catalina describes her vicissitudes, when after her escape from a monastery she took a masculine name and got aboard a ship heading across the ocean. In the New World, she enlisted in the Spanish army and fought in several battles as an ordinary soldier.
