Description Conflicting approaches in the policy of democracy promotion are inevitably connected with the effectivity of democratization process all around the world. However, systematic research about their emergence and effects is still missing. On the basis of academic discussion identified in the special issue of the journal Democratization, the paper presents current state of art and analyses main arguments about the conflicting objectives in the programmes and the projects concerning the support of democratic institutions and democracy as a form of governance. The theoretical debate is subsequently amended by the concept of so called implosion of democratization and its delimitation towards the context of democratic transformation. General results call for more attention to this phenomenon understanding of which is much needed in order to overcome the serious pitfalls that are related to democratization programmes and their planning.
